A New Stage, A Bigger Future: Why the Friedman Auditorium Reopening Matters
When the Friedman Auditorium reopens at SEED MD, it will introduce the beginning of new possibilities for students and the wider Baltimore community.
The update is transformational. The upgraded auditorium offers a professional-quality environment where creativity can thrive, whether through music, theater, or behind-the-scenes production. It replaces outdated infrastructure with a space that invites ambition, giving students the tools and confidence to perform, create, and lead. Just as importantly, it opens doors that didn’t exist before, making high-quality showcases, student-led productions, and technical training a regular part of campus life.
SEED students now have a state-of-the-art venue that not only showcases their talents but helps connect them to potential college pathways and careers in the creative industries. From lighting and sound design to stage management and performance, students can gain hands-on experience with real-world applications.
The auditorium is poised to become hub for Southwest Baltimore. In a neighborhood with few large performance venues, it creates a welcoming space for community connection, with a space for events and celebrations.
With seating for more than 800 guests, a professional-grade sound system, upgraded lighting, and advanced visual capabilities, the auditorium is designed to support a wide range of events. It is the largest gathering space on campus and also one of the most versatile.
The auditorium is expected to expand student participation in the arts, while also serving as a sustainable asset for the school. By hosting external events and partnerships, it can generate revenue that is reinvested into student programs ensuring that its benefits continue to grow over time.
Supported in part by a 150,000 dollar grant from the France-Merrick Foundation, the reopening of the Friedman Auditorium represents more than a renovation. It is a statement about access, opportunity, and the power of the arts to transform lives on stage and far beyond it.
