Pat & Mark Joseph Path to Justice: Journey Completed, A Purpose Define

For SEED students, many of whom come from historically under-resourced communities, the experience is both academic and deeply personal. For supporters traveling alongside them, it is equally transformative. Learning together at sites of profound historical significance creates a rare space where education, relationship-building, and reflection intersect.
SEED students and staff have just returned from this year’s Path to Justice journey, held March 26-30, bringing with them powerful insights, deeper connections, and meaningful reflections that fulfilled the program’s core goals.
More than a trip, Path to Justice is a year-long experiential learning program that blends academic study with personal growth. Designed as a shared experience, students, staff, and supporters learn side by side, engaging in dialogue, asking difficult questions, and reflecting together.
During their time in Montgomery, Birmingham, and Selma, participants visited historic sites including the Legacy Museum, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, the Rosa Parks Museum, the Edmund Pettus Bridge, and more. These experiences brought history to life, allowing students to connect past events to present-day conversations around justice and equity.
For many SEED scholars, the journey is both eye-opening and deeply personal. Traveling alongside adult supporters creates a unique space for cross-generational learning, strengthening relationships, and building empathy. Through guided reflection and post-trip projects, students also elevate their voices—processing and sharing what they’ve learned in meaningful ways.
Rooted in the legacy of the HeBros and supported by the HeBrOpen, Path to Justice continues to expand opportunities for SEED students while honoring a history that connects communities through shared values of resilience, courage, and justice.
As this year’s group returns home, they do so having not only met the program’s goals of deepening civic understanding, strengthening critical thinking, and fostering connection, but also carrying forward a renewed commitment to community, leadership, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.
